Railway Reservation

Indian Railways is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, covering a route length of over 62,000 km and transporting about millions of passengers and freight daily. The railways meandering through the tunnels, the deserts, and mountain ranges traverse through the length and breadth of the country, unfolding the landscapes and history of each state. There are various special trains to cover the rail network of India. The most popular trains are Palace on Wheels, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Samjhauta Express, Lifeline Express and many others. Railways also have some holiday specials exclusively running during summer holidays and other long Indian holidays.

Indian Railways have also made a way through Internet. Various websites provide a plethora of information on Indian Rails, their fares, rules, history, online booking and much more. The most popular and applauded websites are:

www.indianrail.gov.in : gives detail about the Indian Railway System along with the rail fares, schedules and other information about Indian Railways.

www.irctc.co.in: is a government site for online reservation.

www.irctc.com : is a site for online reservation and also provides loads of information about Indian Railways.

www.konkanrailways.com : provides detailed information about the Indian Coastal network.

www.indianrailways.gov.in : provides plethora of information along with the history and policies of Indian Railway System.

www.irfca.org/faq/ : is a vast resource of information related to Indian Railways.

www.trainweb.org/indiarail/ : links to everything about Indian Railways.

http://www.trainenquiry.com/ : is a site established by Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) that provides travel information, online timetable, reservation and running status of the train.

The railway ticket booking centers normally operate between 8 a.m. in the morning to 8 p.m. in the night except on Sundays when they close at 2.00 p.m.

Almost all the routes on the Indian Railways are very crowded. So in such cases, advance Reservations are possible. Even for this, the public has to wait in long queues and sometimes gets only a waiting listed ticket. Advance reservations can usually be made 60 days prior to the date of journey excluding the date of journey.

Confirmed reservations ensure that you are officially permitted to enter and travel by the train in the seat number allotted to you. Reservations can be made for a maximum of 6 persons in a single ticket provided all of them have the same destination.

There are certain authorized travel agencies, which can also issue tickets. From the year 2001 onwards, Senior citizens are allowed a 30% reduction on their reserved tickets. On line reservations are also possible, but most people in India do not have access to a computer and internet, so the lines at the computerized reservations counters just keep getting longer and longer.

The status of your e-ticket reserved is indicated as “confirmed” if the ticket indicates a coach and berth number. If it is indicated As RAC (Reservation against Cancellation), then you can enter the coach, but will be provided only sitting, if someone with ticket reservation cancels his ticket. If the ticket is waiting listed then it means that you cannot get into the reserved coaches.

Go to the Indian Railways Link

Cancellation of reservations can be done even after the train departs. The amount that will be returned to you will be about 50% of what you paid. However if you cancel a waitlisted ticket, there is no cancellation fee provided you cancel the ticket well in advance.
