New Delhi Railways Station :

 Trains arrive at one of three main stations: Delhi Junction, also called Old Delhi or Purani Dilli, the second at New Delhi which lies in Central Delhi , and one at Hazrat Nizamuddin a few kilometers to the south. (Very few trains use Delhi Sarai Rohilla or Delhi Cantt stations.)

New Delhi Railway Station is one of the major railheads of Northern Railways. New Delhi Railway Station connects Delhi with other parts of the country through super fast and express trains. The railway station is 2 Kms from Connaught Place 19 kms from Ghaziabad/Noida- Uttar Pradesh and 31 kms from Gurgaon- Haryana.

The main entrance to New Delhi Railway Station (code NDLS) is located just outside of Paharganj, also known as the back packer ghetto.
This railway station also provides computerized reservation facility and have a tourist information center. Near by is Kashmere Gate where you will find Inter State bus terminal. The nearest airport to New Delhi Railway Station is Indira Gandhi International Airport and Domestic Palam airport. It said New Delhi Railway Station is poised to become a world-class facility - with hotels, motels and other facilities - ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. New Delhi Station is having presently sixteen platforms to handle more than 300 trains both incoming and outgoing.

Northern Railway has not only add four new platforms here but is also constructing a modern station building at Ajmeri Gate-side to meet passenger requirements and add more comfort to their journey. The new Rs.7-crore building will be equipped with elevators and escalators and have state-of-the-art facilities including food plaza, additional dormitories and air-conditioned retiring rooms.

The New Delhi Railway Station may soon resemble a modern shopping complex with a swanky building coming up in its Ajmeri Gate section that will blend Lutyen's classic architecture with a state-of-the-art terminal and passenger facilities.

"The Ajmeri Gate side of the station alone accounts for two-thirds of passenger traffic and a major expansion work has been undertaken to facilitate the growing number of passengers," said Northern Railway General Manager Shri Prakash.

"It has been designed keeping in mind the landscape and history of the area so that it blends well with the neighbouring Lutyen's zone.

"The pillars and arches of the new structures resemble those in

Connaught Place

," he said, referring to the nearby central market built during the British Raj.

New Delhi Railway Station is the  country's busiest, handling 275 trains and four lakh passengers daily.

The new terminal, spread over 6,000 sq metres, will be three-storeyed, with attractions including food plazas, shopping malls, cyber cafes, a VIP lounge, a salon, a beauty parlour, ATMs, an international tourist bureau, high-speed lifts and escalators and foreign exchange counters.

Since the station has been selected to become a world- class railway station by 2010, the development of the Ajmeri Gate section will become part of this process

 Apart from a new reservation complex, current booking counters and technical areas, the new building will also house other facilities including foreign exchange counters, ATMs, touch-screen inquiry system, modern washrooms, cloak rooms and special waiting halls for handicapped people.

It will also have coach guidance system and coach indication boards along with separate arrival and departure areas for speedy entry and exit, ensuring proper segregation of passengers and making the station congestion-free. "With the passenger traffic growing at 10 per cent every year, we hope all these additional facilities will make travel comfortable for passengers,"

The idea is that we will have three levels at the station one is departure and the other is arrival, so there is no congestion. We expect bidders to come here and lets see what shape it takes," he said.

There are other changes also planned:

•  Visitors will not be allowed on the platforms.

•  There will be separate exists for metro and the parking area.

•  More frequent and clear announcements for trains.

•  Parcel and pantry will be located underground.

•  A separate underground parking will be adde Passengers

Facilities at New Delhi Station

The facility of Rail Yatri Niwas is available to rail passengers on advance reservation could be done by sending full amount of the required accommodation by money order in the name of Chief Manager. Rail Yatri Niwas, at New Delhi Railway Station or demand draft in favor of FA & CAO/ Northern Railway.

The Delhi Metro now connects New Delhi Station directly at Ajmeri Gate (second entrance) side near platform 16. You can also  take prepaid autorickshaws, taxis, local city buses from the outside the main entrance and also from Ajmeri Gate entrance side Some city buses also ply to Noida (Uttar Pradesh), and Bahdurgarh(Haryana)
